Damon Nestor Ploumis was educated at Eton, the universities of Cambridge (history) Athens University and the Ecole Biblique Française in Jerusalem (theology). Having received a scholarship from the European Community to study under baritone Costas Pascalis in Athens, he completed his formal vocal studies in the United States, graduating from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, where he studied with Louis Quilico.
A principal guest artist with the Finnish National Opera, he recently sang Don Profondo , Dario Fo’s production of Viaggio a Reims. In the past seasons he has sung the roles of Don Bartolo, Dulcamara (L’Elisir d’amore) , Don Magnifico in Zedda and Hampe’s production of La Cenerentola, and Mephistopheles in La Damnation de Faust. He returns again in 07 and 08 to reprise both Dulcamara and Don Magnifico.
This season’s appearances have been, Dulcamara, Don Magnifico (Germany), Don Profondo (Finland), Don Bartolo (le Nozze di Figaro) in Canada, Pooh Bah in The Mikado (Canada), which he also directed, as well as Don Pasquale ( the UK and France).
Making his debut at the Swedish Royal Opera in 2003, he sang Dulcamara in the new Jonathan Miller production. As a member of the German National Theatre of Weimar, he has sung Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Papageno, Colline, the Grand Inquisitor and Giacinto in Galuppi’s, Il Mondo alla roversa. Damon Nestor Ploumis made his professional debut as Bartolo (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) with the Greek National Opera, a role he reprised with San Francisco Opera’s touring company and at the Alden Bisen Festival in Belgium and at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. As a member of the International Opera Studio at the Opernhaus Zürich, roles included Capulet (Romeo et Juliette), which he reprised in Lübeck, Dr. Lorek (Fedora), Prichitsch (Die Lustige Witwe), and Don Profondo (Viaggio a Reims). With the Zürich Summer Festival, he sang the title role in Telemann’s Pimpinone, whilst at the Basel Festival he sang Le Cassier Antonio in Offenbach’s Les Brigands as well as Don Magnifico. Further appearances include Sam in Trouble in Tahiti (Geneva and Lausanne) and Don Geronio (Il Turco in Italia) in Lübeck. His roles with the Landestheater of Schleswig Holstein include Falstaff (Die Lustigen Weiber) Warlaam (Boris Godunov) and Gessler (Wilhem Tell).
Damon Nestor Ploumis made his US debut as Dulcamara (L’Elisir d’amore) with the Merola Program of the San Francisco Opera. Further roles include Gianni Schicchi; Leporello (Don Giovanni); Don Alfonso (Cosi Fan Tutte); Kecal (The Bartered Bride); Don Pasquale; Hortensius (Daughter of the Regiment); Collatinus (Rape of Lucretia); Bartolo (Le Nozze di Figaro), and his Lincoln Center debut as King Melchior (Amahl and the Night Visitors) at Avery Fisher Hall. Additionally, in 2004-2005, he sang Don Magnifico in Münster, Mephistopheles in Gounod’s Faust, Ramfis (Concertante) at the gala concert for Shaker Mtn.Opera (New York), Andrea Cornaro in Donizetti's last work Caterina Cornaro in Cyprus, Papageno at the German National Theatre in Weimar, Biterolf in Tannhäuser in Heidelberg, Erster Handwerksbursch (Wozzek) in Münster, Dulcamara at Schloss Tabor in Austria and Dulcamara in Rostock.In June of 2005, Ploumis sang in Berlin the role of “Wissen” in the world premiere of The Speed of Light, a cross media Opera produced by Phase7 in celebration of Einstein. As part of the five hundredth anniversary of the founding of Christ’s College Cambridge, he sang a solo recital with Erkki Korhonen of the Finnish National Opera.
Future appearances for 07-08 include, Ramfis, Dulcamara, Don Magnifico, Don Pasquale, as well as directing Cosi Fan Tutte in Philadelphia and Amahl and the Night Visitors, in Cyprus. Download Resume [54 KB]
